How does the iCloud backup work?

To use this feature, launch WHIB and navigate to Settings, then iCloud. To perform a one-time backup manually, set Backup to iCloud to No, then toggle it to Yes. This initiates an immediate backup, which may take a few minutes depending on the amount of history in the app. If the backup is successful, the "Last backup" message on the page will update to reflect the date and time of the most recent backup. Once the backup is complete, set Backup to iCloud back to No.

To perform regular backups, leave Backup to iCloud set to Yes — WHIB will attempt a backup once a week, and you can restrict this to Wi-Fi only. If you log out of your iCloud account, or the app can't access it for any reason, the backup may be unsuccessful, so it's worth checking this screen from time to time.

A successful backup stores a single file in your iCloud account named whib.cloud. You can find it on your device by going to Settings → your name → iCloud → Manage Storage → Where Have I Been. If you see multiple files here, it's safe to delete all but whib.cloud.

Can I use iCloud to back up two devices?

No — we don't recommend backing up location crumbs from two different devices to the same iCloud account. It may result in data loss.

Does iCloud also back up my location tags and other settings?

No. WHIB only backs up your location crumbs — not your tags, background settings, or anything else.

How many location tags can I add?

There's no hard limit, but we don't recommend more than 15 location tags within a 100-mile radius if you want the best battery performance.

What happens with my data?

WHIB keeps your data on your device, or in your own iCloud if you choose to back it up. We take privacy seriously and have no access to it.

How much battery does WHIB use?

Between 2–4% of your battery per day. This can vary with how much you travel, but we're deliberate about how little our algorithm relies on GPS.

Can I correct or manually add data?

Not yet. WHIB logs your location and activity automatically through the day. A future version will let you correct a location by choosing from multiple options.

How do I resolve a location crumb?

WHIB resolves crumbs automatically, but needs a good internet connection to do so. The Crumbs section in Settings shows how many crumbs remain unresolved, and updates live as they're resolved. We recommend keeping the app open until they're done — WHIB won't resolve crumbs in the background, to preserve battery life.

If you've just resolved a lot of crumbs, tap Refresh Crumb Calculations on this page afterward, so the app can reanalyze and verify everything in case anything was missed.

What should I do to safeguard my data in the app?

Two things, every now and then: back up your data, and check that your crumbs have resolved. Because your data lives only on your device — there's no cloud copy on our end — losing your device or deleting the app without a backup means losing your history for good.

You can check crumb status any time under Settings → Crumbs; a large backlog of unresolved crumbs can cause tracking and reporting issues.

I bought a new phone — how do I move my data?

Easiest way: back up your entire phone and transfer to the new device. If that's not possible, back up WHIB manually using the iCloud or computer steps above.

How are crumbs resolved?

WHIB records your latitude and longitude as you move — each record is a "crumb." Each crumb then needs to be "resolved," translating those coordinates into a physical address so the app can build a diary of your day. This requires a data connection, so resolution can occasionally fall behind.

To check, go to Settings → Crumbs. Leaving the app open on this screen lets it resolve any backlog — WHIB can't do this in the background, to preserve battery.

Why is my app only showing "Resolving Crumbs"?

Go to Settings → Crumbs and tap Refresh Crumb Calculations. This forces WHIB to reprocess your crumbs and should clear up any missing information — this screen will also show if any crumbs are still unresolved.

The app is no longer tracking me.

This sometimes happens after an iOS upgrade. Try the following:

(a) In iPhone Settings, find WHIB and confirm Location access is set to Always, Motion & Fitness is on, and Background App Refresh is on.
(b) Launch WHIB → Settings → General.
(c) Tap the moon icon to stop tracking, and wait a few seconds on the "off" screen.
(d) Quit the app fully (swipe it away).
(e) Relaunch WHIB and tap the moon icon to start tracking again.

The app crashes on launch.

This is usually corrupted app data. Try Fix 1 first: quit the app, go to iPhone Settings → WHIB and switch on Rebuild Crumb History, then restart the app.

If that doesn't work, Fix 2 (on a Mac): connect your iPhone, open Finder, select your device, go to Files → WHIB, and copy all files to a folder on your desktop. Compress the folder and email it to us, or share it via a service like Dropbox.

Fix 2 (on Windows): connect your iPhone, open iTunes → your device → File Sharing → WHIB, copy the files to your desktop, then compress and send them the same way. We'll do our best to repair your files manually — this can take a few hours, so send them while you expect to be in one place for a while.

The app seems less accurate than before.

Accuracy shouldn't change with a new device, an iOS update, or an app update — it depends on GPS data from your device, which has some natural variance. Near locations that sit between two cell towers, your signal can bounce back and forth, occasionally producing odd "journeys." Adding a Location Tag at that spot usually helps. If accuracy still feels consistently off, email support@bleatinc.com.

Can I delete and reinstall the app?

Yes — but back up first, since all your data lives only on your device. Two ways to do it:

iCloud (needs a good connection): Settings → iCloud → set Backup to iCloud to No, then to Yes, and wait while it backs up. Once "Last backup" updates, you're safe to delete and reinstall, then use Restore in Settings → iCloud afterward.

Computer: connect your iPhone, and on a Mac use Finder → your device → Files → WHIB; on Windows use iTunes → File Sharing → WHIB. Copy the files to your desktop before reinstalling, then copy them back afterward to restore your data.

I can't restore my data from iCloud.

First, confirm the backup file exists: Settings → your name → iCloud → Manage Storage → Where Have I Been — you should see a file called whib.cloud. If it's there and restore still fails, we may be able to restore it manually if you email us the file. On a Mac, go to Settings → Apple ID → iCloud → Manage… → Where Have I Been → Show in Finder, then send us that file by email or a service like Dropbox.
